A C Lowson's Garage, Eggleston, Barnard Castle, was founded in the early 1920's, and is a traditional family run business. The garage is now in its third generation of family ownership.

Operating from the same site for over 80 years, it still serves the Teesdale community for all their motoring needs, sales, servicing, MOTs and petrol or diesel fuels.

Cleasby Lowson initially operated from Romaldkirk, Mickleton and Middleton-in-Teesdale dispensing petrol and diesel until he built a garage at Eggleston. The photographs shows the old building, which was later replaced by the current garage in the early 1950's.

The business gained the Austin Cars franchise in the 1940's and sold new A60's, A55's, A40's Morris Minors and eventually the new mini, which was launched in August 1959. From this point the business grew from strength to strength. The garage is now renowned for its impeccable service to the local community.

Clearsby's Garage, as it was affectionately referred to, was one of the first garages in Teesdale to be appointed official MOT Testing. Stations were introduced in 1953 and are still a main stay of the current business, with the garage being one of the first in the UK to be fitted out for the Computer Test Certificates.

As the years enfolded, new car sale increased overseeing the Longbridge factories change from Austin Morris, BMC, British Leyland, Leyland Cars, BH Cars, Austin Rover and Rover Group in that order.

A C Lowson Ltd still concentrates on the sale of new and nearly new car sales (although sadly not rover) of all makes. They also still focus on servicing, MOTs and petrol or diesel fuels. The garage is open seven days a week and offers a friendly service.

A car collection and delivery service is available to customers. The Lowson family are proud of the strong reputation they have accumulated over the last 80 years and strive to progress.

Terry Lowson, manager, insists on the importance of customer care on a one to one basis. “My customers are encouraged to talk through their car problems with Paul Hebdon, who is our senior technician.” These days it is so rare to speak to the person who is actually going to work on your vehicle.

You can get MOTs while you wait with refreshments and facilities and even a quick look under your own car, which is quite unique.

We look forward to your appointment where we can show you our facilities and service or maybe just check your oil and tyres – free of charge of course!

To summarise, Terry Lowson and his team continue to offer the excellent service for all your motoring needs, but still in the old fashioned way that now sadly excludes the average garage see you soon!
